When ships release ballast water at a new port-of-call, they risk introducing alien species, from small fish to microorganisms, into the water around the new area.
This can result in a variety of harmful effects with microbial exposure, lower habitat quality, and other dangers that can ultimately harm fishing and even protected species in the region.
In response to these ecological risks, the International Marine Organization (IMO) adopted the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships’ Ballast Water and Sediments. This Convention aimed to halt the spread of invasive aquatic species by implementing requirements on the shipping industry to treat their ballast water
PRIMARY CRITICAL ISSUES ARE:
1. To meet the discharge criteria as per the international marine safety and water discharge regulations at sea water
2. To prevent the damaging effects caused due to transfer of harmful aquatic organisms and pathogens
3. Meeting the requirements of Ballast Water Management.
VISION FOR SOLUTION:
To Design Ballast water treatment system for normal to get discharge criteria as.
The standards for regulation are:
Particle size < 50 μm
Free Residual Chlorine < 1 ppm
E Coli & other Bacteria & Viruses < 100 Colony
Forming Unit (cfu) per 100 mL
PROCESS DESCRIPTION:
Sea water Collection tank à Screening à Filtration à Disinfection (Electro Chlorination)
During ballasting operation, the system removes aquatic organisms more than 50 µm through filter unit.
Secondly sodium hypochlorite is applied as a disinfectant which is generated at the electro chlorination unit using the side-stream of seawater.
During de-ballasting operation, the treated ballast water from the ballast tank is neutralized by neutralization unit and discharged.
The Ballast water treatment system has the following features:
Filtration unit (50 μm) removes large organisms and solid particles
The side stream of the seawater goes through the electro chlorination unit that generates the Sodium Hypo Chlorite in situ which disinfects the residual planktons, pathogens, larva or spores
During de-ballasting, neutralization unit adds sodium thiosulfate solution into the treated ballast water to neutralize the residual water
The control system includes PLC, HMI and auxiliary equipment;
